Groundwork

I am by no means an expert when it comes to groundwork.  I simply see how foundational it is in the training of every horse I work with.  It is critical!  And it's fun!

I've heard it said, "Groundwork changes your horse's 'fight or flight' instinct into 'stay and play.’”

I believe groundwork exercises build confidence in both the horse and handler, and must begin long before one's seat ever hits the saddle.

Repeatedly, I hear, "My horse won't go over the bridge", or, "My horse won't load into the trailer".  The issue is not the bridge or the trailer, but rather, who is in control of the horse’s feet.

There is truth in the saying, "Respect comes from effectively controlling the feet of the horse".

Whether I am working a young colt or a well-schooled show horse, groundwork gives me a quick read on the state of the horse’s mind.  Some refer to the moment when a horse chooses to be “with” you as "the join up" or "hooking up".  In my opinion, it is a powerful connection when a horse willingly moves it's feet at my subtle and quiet request.

The point must be made that there needs to be a balance between sensitizing and desensitizing.  Over-emphasizing either end of the spectrum creates issues which could be the subject for another post.

This Spring, El Centro will host a few evening group groundwork sessions.  The goals will be to learn together, to give our horses some new skills and to have fun in a relaxed and safe environment.  Contact us for details.
