During any given year, I have the opportunity to sit on many different horses. While I consider it a privilege to work with any horse, every now and then one comes along with whom I find I have a special connection. This is natural for any horseman.
Chance is one of those horses. Many years ago, Chance lost his left eye, leaving him visually impaired. He has had tremendous obstacles to overcome and has had to learn to do life differently.
While he was only with me for a month for a spring startup, we quickly formed a bond. I was continually challenged to be his sight on his left side. It reminded me to be considerate of the horse and I felt his trust in me grow every time we were together.
This horse had huge try! We worked on obstacles, trailer loading, ring work, flying changes, clipping and hacking.
He was always aware of my voice even when he couldn't see me. He was attentive and present and that caused me to do the same for him.
Gillian Friesen, his owner, is one lucky gal and I am thankful that she trusted me with her special horse. He has helped me grow to be a more attentive and cognizant horseman.
